Following repeated Complaints and intelligence received by Zone 2 Police Command, Onikan , Lagos State, the Assistant Inspector General Of Police, AIG Muhammad Ali Ari , despatched his Operatives to mop up the corridors.
With the ongoing operations process, no fewer than ten Policemen were said to have been arrested while conducting illegal duties along the corridors.
Detectives of the Zonal X-squad were said to have swooped on the suspects unaware while mounting illegal checkpoints along the Bagagry/Seme border expressway.
It would be recalled that Newsmen had during an earlier press briefing alerted the Police Chief on series of complaints by Nigerians , especially businessmen plying the route ,who daily are lamenting the untold hardship they have been subjected to by various security Agencies, especially in the hands of unethical police officers at the various checkpoints.
AIG Ari ,while giving a feed back to newsmen on Monday stated thus : “When I assumed office as the AIG here, I was inanundated with complaints of the activities of security agents mounting illegal checkpoints for the purpose of extortion and I said something must be done to address this.
So we set up a team of Detectives from the Zonal X-squad to investigate and report back. I can authoritatively tell you that over 10 police men have been arrested and are being detained for the necessary disciplinary action.
One funny thing about this people is that most of them are not serving policemen either at the border or in Badagry.
They just go there, mount road block and start collecting money from travelers and businessmen doing their legitimate businesses. We have a way of dealing with them internally.
The raid exercise is going to be sustained because the IGP Olukayode Egbetokun has met with the Controller General of Customs Service Wale Adeniyi on how to collaborate and checkmate the menace that route.”
