Delta State Police Command has arrested suspected child traffickers and rescued a three-year-old child who had been abducted from his mother.
The operation also led to the recovery of a locally made cut-to-size gun and an abandoned tricycle.
The incident came to light when Aisha Yusuf, a resident of Abraka community in Asaba, reported to the police that her son, Abubakar Atiku, had been taken by a man named Mohammed Isah, aged 35.
Acting swifty on the complaint, Commissioner of Police Delta State, CP Wale Abass, issued immediate instructions to the DPO ‘C’ Division Asaba, CSP Apu Torukeregha, to track down the suspect and rescue the missing child.
Under the directive of the Commissioner of Police, the DPO led a team of operatives from the Anti-crime patrol division in an intensive search for the stolen child.
The team raided the Abraka market in Oshimili-South LGA, where they apprehended the primary suspect, Mohammed Isah.Â
During interrogation, Isah confessed to the crime and provided information that led to the arrest of three other members of the child-stealing syndicate: Ibrahim Sani, Kabiru Ibrahim, and Abubakar Mohammed, who is a 32-year-old disabled individual.
Initial investigations revealed that the suspects were part of a child trafficking syndicate involved in stealing children and selling them for exorbitant sums of money.
Acting on information provided by the arrested suspects, the police proceeded to a hotel in Onitsha, Anambra state, where they arrested Suleiman Mohammed, aged 38. To the police’s relief, the missing child was found in his custody.
Further investigations revealed that the suspects had agreed to sell the child for the sum of Eight Hundred Thousand Naira (#800,000).
Following the successful operation, the child has been reunited with his mother, providing a moment of great joy and relief for the family. Meanwhile, all the suspects are currently in police custody as investigations continue.
In a separate incident, the ‘A’ Division Warri Anti-Crime Patrol team made an important discovery during their routine visibility patrol. While patrolling the area behind Daudu Police post, the team spotted a tricycle with registration number BUR 240 VC carrying two male occupants.
Sensing something amiss, the officers attempted to search the tricycle.
However, the occupants swiftly escaped, evading arrest. Despite their escape, the diligent officers found a locally fabricated cut-to-size pistol inside the abandoned tricycle.
The recovered weapon is now being held as evidence, and a manhunt has been launched to track down the fleeing suspects.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Wale Abass, expressed his gratitude to the public for their cooperation and support thus far.
